Roger Eugene Haley, hero, husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and loyal friend, joined his loved ones in heaven this last Thursday, June 8th, 2017. He was born January 3rd, 1949 to Willa Clorinda (Cummins) Haley and Joe C. Haley in Galena Park, Texas.
At the age of 17, Roger joined the Army Airborne (173rd) and learned to be a medic in Vietnam. While there, Roger was awarded medals for bravery in combat: a Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, an Air Medal, 5 Army Commendations (3 for bravery and 2 for meritorious achievement), and Vietnamese Jump Wings.
Roger devoted his life to Veterans. He was the commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for 17 years in Sheridan – Chapter 9; he was a Veteran’s Service Officer (VSO) and helped with the VA Volunteer Service (VAVS). He also was a DAV State Commander for one year.
Roger was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing golf, going on bicycle rides, bowling and spending time at Tongue River Canyon, his favorite place of all. Only in recent years did his body begin to betray him and he could no longer enjoy his favorite activities. He was devoted to his family and his dogs, Peaches (d.2004) and Amber.
He was preceded in death by all four grandparents: Floyd and Effie Cummins and Jack and Gladys Haley; his 2nd ex-wife, Bonnie Haley; and brother-in-law, Jeff Lannan.
Roger is survived by the love of his life, his 3rd wife, Teri Lannan Haley; his parents, “Clo” Roach and Joe Haley; his brothers: Bobby, Doug, Lynn and Brian Haley; his children: Christy Dixon (Wesley), Aaron Moore (Adam), Janelle Lannan Schittone (Luis), and Justin Haley (Jackie); his grandchildren: Joseph and Haley Arnold and Lita Schittone; his aunt Edna (Mary) Williams; his many cousins, nieces and nephews; aunts Ike and Sis, uncles Mike and Bob; brothers-in-law: Jim, John, Tom, David, Michael, Joe, Zach, and Greg Lannan; and sisters- in law, Gini Olson and Mary Barbula. He is also survived by his veteran family of Chapter 9 of the DAV; and his friends from the VA, Dave Heir and Rotha Peet.
A Celebration of Roger’s life will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan followed by a luncheon at the Parish Center.
