Mel Heckman was a good friend to my husband, Roger Haley, for many years. He actually got Roger interested in the DAV which kept him busy and out of trouble for the last few decades of his life. I appreciated their friendship and, when I found out how much Mel liked fruitcake, I baked more than one each Christmas season so he could have one to share with his wife and later with his companion. I liked baking him birthday cakes as well. I hope he knew that I did this because of his friendship with Roger. Roger loved Mel dearly and often went to him for advice with the DAV. He was a really nice man and I loved him too.

My sincere condolences to Uncle Mel’s family and friends.

This makes me sad. I had hoped to get to see Mr. Heckman at least one more time when I got to Sheridan this spring. He use to stop by and tell me "hello" when he came to shop at Wal-Mart where I worked when I lived in Sheridan. I moved away and spoke with him a couple of times on the phone and told him I had read of his trip to Hawaii and wanted to stop in and see him next time I came to Sheridan. What an amazing man !!! What a beautiful heart. My heartfelt sympathy to his children and grandchildren. May you find strength in your faith and may you find solace in your favorite memories of your loved one. He will be missed !!!

I had the privilege to meet Mr Heckman, last summer. Mr Heckman presented me with his autobiography, that he wrote in 2016. He even signed his book to me. He was a American hero, part of the Greatest Generation.
