Dr. Herbert V. Adams
About:
Dr. Herbert Vincent Adams, 93, of Sheridan, Wyoming died peacefully Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Dr. Adams was born in Sheridan on September 3, 1918 to Jasper “Jack” & Hermina “Minnie” Bantle Adams in the old Sheridan Hospital building, where he later practiced medicine.
He grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Holy Name Catholic School and Sheridan High School in 1936, where he was named class salutatorian. He was awarded one of two Whitney scholarships available that year to continue his education at the University of Wyoming. He worked as a cook for a year after high school graduation in his father's Sheridan restaurant, The Class Cafe, to accumulate college funds for room and board. This may be where he developed his lifelong appreciation of fine food.
He later attended Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he married Margaret Violet Bruchmann of LaCrosse in February, 1943. Dr. Adams interned at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Medical Corps from 1943 – 1947. In 1944 and 1945, he was an army staff physician in several large receiving hospitals in Georgia, for troops with severe wounds (burns, orthopedic injury, abdominal wounds) which could not be treated at the battle front.
After the service, he returned to Sheridan and opened his own medical practice. Dr. Adams retired in March, 1983. Dr. and Mrs. Adams were dedicated to their medical work and their family, and enjoyed traveling all over the world, fly fishing, and spending time at the family cabin in Story and in the Big Horn Mountains. They were members of Holy Name Catholic Church.
Dr. Adams was preceded in death by his wife in May, 2011 and a son Herbert “Hub”.
Dr. Adams is survived by his son Tim and wife Barbara Froula of Denver, CO; daughter Mary Adams-Pirtz & husband Jim Pirtz of Billings, MT; and several grand and great- grandchildren.
