Alvin F. Shimek

About:

Alvin F. Shimek of Sheridan, Wyoming, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 surrounded by family. He is resting peacefully in the arms of his Lord.

Mr. Shimek was born on the family farm outside of Marsland, Nebraska to Michael J. and Gertrude (Jackson) Shimek. He grew up and attended country schools around Marsland.

After leaving the family farm in Nebraska, Al came to Wyoming and went to work at the mine in Monarch.

He married Dorothy Lucille Mahoney on June 14, 1945 in Hardin, Montana, and they lived in Story, Wyoming. Al then went to work for C. B. & Q. Railroad where he was stationed out of Guernsey, Wyoming for 8 years. Later Al was transferred to Lysite, Wyoming. He was offered a job in Atlantic City with Pomroy Bactel Gold Mine. When the job was finished, he moved the family home to Sheridan.

Al went to work for Germain’s seed processing in the old Holy Sugar building. As carpentry was what he really loved, he went to work as a union carpenter at Coal Strip, Montana and also at Black Butte Mine by Rock Springs, Wyoming. Due to health reasons, Al retired in the summer of 1984.

Mr. Shimek was a member of the Carpenter’s Union in Billings, Montana. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved his miniature Schnauzers, especially little Emma. Al was always happy and teased anybody he could. He was greatly loved by his family and will be missed terribly.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and one sister, Evelyn Baltz.

He is survived by one son, Charles A. Shimek, of Sheridan, Wyoming; one daughter, Nancy (Leslie) Meyers, of Sheridan, Wyoming; one step-sister, Wanda Wattenburg, of Sheridan, Wyoming; grandchildren Dayle Meyers, (Jack) of Sheridan, Robert Meyers (Myra) of Gillette, Wyoming, and Kelly Shields (Dan) of Castle Rock, Colorado; great grandchildren Micheal and Jakob, of Gillette, Wyoming, Dallas, Sarah, and Davis, of Castle Rock, Colorado, Summer, Becki, and Tanner, of Sheridan, one great, great granddaughter, Abby Jo, of Sheridan; 3 nephews and 4 nieces.

A private family graveside service for Al will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
