Edna Gertrude Scott, 98, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Sheridan Manor.
Edna was born in Campbell County, WY on December 14, 1915 to Fred and Margaret Johnson Schroeder.
She grew up on the family homestead south of Gillette where she tended flocks of sheep and turkeys. Edna attended rural schools in Campbell County and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1932 with a Normal Training Certificate which qualified her to teach. She taught several years in rural schools in Campbell and Sheridan Counties, attending summer school at the University of Wyoming where she earned her degree.
During WWII Edna worked for the Western Union Telegraph Company in Salt Lake City, UT. She married Vincent Chalfant in 1945 upon his discharge from the army. They returned to Sheridan in 1946 and lived first on King Street and then in the Woodland Park neighborhood south of Sheridan.
Edna worked part-time at the Western Union office in Sheridan and also taught classes at the Wyoming Girls' School until 1955 when her first son Larry was born. A second son, Michael, was born the following year. Mr. Chalfant passed away in 1969. Edna remained with her two sons in the house south of Sheridan for several more years. Her home became a gathering place for all the neighborhood boys. She enjoyed tending her chickens and garden and preparing meals for her guests. Edna married Lawrence Scott in 1983. They lived in a house on Smith Street in Sheridan. After Mr. Scott's death in 1992, Edna remained in her home until 2011 and then again from 2013-2014. Edna was a communicant member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan for 67 years. She was also a member of the Brundage Homemakers' Club. She enjoyed taking care of her home and cats and working outdoors with her flowers.
Edna was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, her son Michael, and five siblings, including her beloved sister Ruth Kirby of Cheyenne, WY. She is survived by her son Larry Chalfant of Sheridan.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 16 in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Duane Simonson officiating.
Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Memorials may benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter.
