Helen McMahan

About:

Helen McMahan (née Helen Lewis (Apostolou)) died peacefully on September 13, 2016 in Sheridan, WY, at the age of 95. Helen is survived by her sons, Ronald L. and R. Brian McMahan; her grandchildren Rachel, Peter, Lauren, and Halen McMahan; and her great grandchildren Liam and Elliot Jarvis and Jack Ryan McMahan. She is preceded in death by her husband Loren A. McMahan, her brother John Lewis, her sister Bessie George, and her grandson Jason R. McMahan. Helen was born on October 31, 1920 in the Simpson Coal Camp in Lafayette, CO. She graduated from Lafayette high school in 1938, and married Loren A. McMahan, her high school sweetheart, in 1945 while living in San Francisco, CA. After moving back to Lafayette following the war, she and Loren built two successful businesses: a Chevrolet dealership and an insurance agency. Helen was an accomplished cook whose many special recipes remain family staples. Throughout her life, Helen was a pillar of the Lafayette community and active in a number of charitable and religious organizations. She was generous almost to a fault giving money to individuals and charities in need. And her compassion didn't end with people, it extended to the many dogs she saved and pampered her whole life. She is remembered as a kind, loving person, who befriended the many people who passed through her life. She traveled around the globe with her husband in Europe, Asia, and South America. She made many trips to Greece beginning in 1970 when she was reunited with her extended family in the mountain village of Megalovriso from which her parents Theodore and Stella had emigrated in 1910. Following the death of her husband in 1984, Helen divided her time between Lafayette, CO and Sheridan, WY, where she developed close circles of devoted friends. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Champion Funeral Home at 244 S Brooks St. in Sheridan, with a reception to follow at the chapel. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Helen's life. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to The Sheridan City Animal Shelter, the People Assistance Food Bank, or the Lafayette Volunteer Fire Dept., 401 N. 111th St., Lafayette, CO 80026. Condolences can be sent to 1448 Avon St, Sheridan 82801. A graveside burial service is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the Lafayette Cemetery, Lafayette, CO. Again, Helen's Colorado friends are welcome to attend. Online condolences may be written at www.championfh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Champion Funeral Home.
