Khariman J. Creswell

About:

Khariman J. Creswell passed away quietly at her home in Sheridan on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018. She was 93.

She was born in Carroll County, Indiana, to Charles L. Babcock and Grace Snell Babcock on Sept. 25, 1924, at her grandfather’s farm.

Khariman and her parents moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1927, where her father was employed by the railroad. In 1930, the family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, where the family lived in a cabin along Rapid Creek.

In 1931, the family moved to Sheridan, where Khariman attended Coffeen Elementary School. She graduated Sheridan High School in 1942, and went on to attend Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, South Dakota. She then went on to Greeley State College to complete her teaching certificate. Khariman was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, which she continued to be involved in following college.

After a six-year courtship, Khariman married Vaughn Creswell in 1947 at the First Methodist Church in Sheridan. They recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. The couple then moved on to the Creswell Family Ranch on Big Goose.

Khariman began her teaching career at Pleasant Valley School on Big Goose while Vaughn milked a herd of Holstein cows at the Big Goose place. They were soon blessed with two daughters, Deborah and Patricia.

In 1961, the family moved to the Bow and Arrow Ranch north of Arvada on the Powder River, which was homesteaded in the late 1880s. Khariman schooled the girls in a one-room schoolhouse on the ranch and assured that they were both very active and successful in 4-H.

Khariman was an excellent cook, an avid reader and enjoyed needlepoint and playing the piano.

Khariman is survived by her husband, Vaughn; daughters, Deborah (Jack) Barkley and Patricia Creswell; five grandchildren, Jason (Emily) Barkley, Jennifer (Paul) Ryan, Julie (John) Hoffer, Heather Hosford and Cristina (Levi) Gorzalka; nine great-grandchildren, Jackson, Ethan and Henry Ryan, Lucy and Charles Barkley, Margaret and Thomas Hoffer, Tildyn and Tallis Gorzalka; nieces, Kim Phillips and Pam Sajec; nephews, David (Melody) Ledbetter and Mark (Jennifer) Ledbetter; and numerous other great-nieces and great-nephews.

Khariman was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Charlene Ledbetter; and brother, William Babcock.

The family would like to thank the in-home health care providers and hospice for the excellent care that they provided to Khariman in her home during her last days.

There will be a private family graveside service for Khariman. Online condolences may be written at championfh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Champion Funeral Home.
