Nancy Rogers (Hillis) White, of Ranchester, WY passed away in Sheridan, WY on Friday, March 22, 2013.

Nancy was born to Richard and Alice (Rogers) Hillis on March 27, 1921 in Buffalo, New York. She attended schools in Bronxville, New York and graduated from Holmquist School in New Hope, Pennsylvania. She attended Paine Hall School of Medical Technology in New York City and after graduation worked with the Frontier Nursing Service out of Wendover, Kentucky. She often talked of her work in the hills of Appalachia taking care of patients and helping other medical workers with their horses on which they traveled in areas with no roads.

She also worked for physicians in White Plains, New York and Palo Alto, California. As a teenager she had visited the Strang Ranch near Golden, Colorado and returned there to work one summer. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II serving at Tilton General Hospital at Fort Dix, New Jersey. While at the Strang Ranch, she had met Melvin R. White whose family’s ranch was near Strang’s. She and Melvin were married September 9, 1946 at the Congregational Church in Hardin, Montana. They lived in Sheridan and Dayton before settling on their ranch between Ranchester and Dayton in March 1948 where she remained until 2009 when she moved to Sheridan because of declining health.

She was active in many organizations including the Dayton Congregational Church and later the First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan, Ranchester Women’s Club, Farm Bureau, 4-H, Republican Women, Northern Wyoming Mental Health Foundation, VFW Auxiliary, the Sheridan Hospital Auxiliary, and Sheridan County Cowbelles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin R. White, her son Claude H. White, brother Richard Rogers Hillis and sister Elizabeth Hillis Rasmussen.

She is survived by daughters Dorothy (George) Oliveira of Helena, Montana and Alice White Ohman of Sheridan; son William White of Ranchester; grandchildren Lisa McMullen and Lori McMullen both of Sheridan; Nancy Oliveira and Christopher (Jilyn) Oliveira both of Helena, Montana; William White of Broomfield, Colorado; Joseph White of Castle Rock, Colorado; M. Beth White of Ranchester; and Thomas White of Laramie. Her great grandchildren are Avery, Michael, and Carter McMullen of Sheridan and Hayden Oliveira of Helena, Montana. Her fifth great grandchild, Hattie Oliveira, will be born soon in Helena, Montana. She is also survived by her sisters Margaret H. Sowden of Greenville, South Carolina and Ann Hillis of Brunswick, Maine and her sister-in-law Lela White Green of Golden, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials in her memory may benefit the Dayton Rescue or the Sheridan Senior Center.

A private burial will be held at the Dayton Cemetery and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
