David R. Roberts, 67, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethesda Worship Center with the Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Aug. 17, 1942, in Sheridan to Elmer and Lavoris (Wyrick) Roberts, he grew up and attended schools in California. He returned to the Sheridan area in 1961. He married Cheryl Pease on Aug. 12, 1962, in Lodge Grass, Mont. They moved in 1968 to Oregon, where he worked as a meat cutter. The couple returned in 1975 to Sheridan, where he worked for Jersey Creamery until operating the Broadway Exchange store. He sold the store in the mid-1990s and then worked at Shipton’s Big R. Mr. Roberts spent summers in Alaska guiding fishermen with one of his sons. In retirement, he ran a business sharpening knives. A deacon at Bethesda Worship Center and life member of the National Rifle Association, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and the mountains. Survivors include his wife; five sons, David of Dayton, Rodney of Victor, Idaho, Monte of Soldotna, Alaska, Keith of Sheridan, and Rick of Monterey, Calif.; a daughter, Debra Gardner of Sutler Creek, Calif.; a brother, Michael Roberts of Sheridan; four sisters, Barbara Ellis and Doris Ledford of Sheridan, Judy Roberts of Big Horn, and Iva Graham of Loveland, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Joseph's Storehouse food bank or Adopt-A-Block c/o Bethesda Worship Center, 1100 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801.
