Gregory Niles Smith (Wingnut), 63, died peacefully at his home on Thursday September 19, 2019 after a 10 year battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves behind his cherished girlfriend, Tammy Damori; his three children Jennifer (Conan) Mullaney, Joseph (Mandy) Smith, Tucker Smith; five amazing grandkids, Cydney Mullaney, Reagan Mullaney, Kelsey Mullaney, Kolby Smith, Sawyer Smith; his mother LaDonna Smith; two brothers Kenneth Smith, Jeff Smith (Tracy); one sister Tammy Smith Dexter; many cousins, nieces, nephews and many close friends.
Born in Salmon Idaho, Greg is the son of Walter and LaDonna (Durrant) Smith. He was raised in Wyoming but Greg eagerly spent summers at his grandparent’s farm in Blackfoot Idaho, with his beloved grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He would also assist his dad anyway possible, just to help out. Greg graduated from Lander Valley High School in 1975 and then attended the Welding Tech School in Idaho Falls, Idaho where he learned the trade of welding. He met his wife, Lauri, in Lander Wyoming and they married in 1978. They soon started their family with their first child, Jennifer, born in 1979. In a short time, they added two more children, Joe and Tucker, to their family. Greg and Lauri later divorced.
In the early 80’s Greg moved his family to Arizona to pursue his career in welding. While he did not particularly enjoy Arizona, his love for Wyoming never waned. Eventually he convinced his kids that moving back to Wyoming was pretty comparable to DisneyLand. And so when Greg got the opportunity to move back to Wyoming, he jumped at the chance. It was at that time, in 1987, that Greg began his 32 year career at Decker Coal. Greg took such pride in his work and he loved his job at Decker Coal, continuing to work up until July 2019. He loved the friends he made at work, and he willingly shared his knowledge with anyone that was eager to learn.
Besides work, Greg’s biggest and most precious priority to him was his family. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his family and grandkids. His grandkids were his world and his pride and joy! His girlfriend, Tammy, also meant the world to him as they enjoyed every minute together. Greg often said that he didn’t have a bucket list because he made his goals his reality. He lived life to the fullest, especially if he could throw rodeo, horses or tractors in the mix.
Greg is preceded in death by his father, Walter Niles Smith; both sets of grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles.
A viewing will be held at Champion Funeral Home Friday, September 27, 2019 from 3-4 pm followed by a Celebration of Life/Memorial Service at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall starting at 5 pm. In honor of Greg dress is casual, as he was most comfortable in his hat, jeans, and boots. Come share a story, and BYOB, with his family and friends to honor Greg aka “Wingnut”.
